Will there be music?
Music, ExperiencesRelaunching Great event in uncertain times gives us many opportunities to make it even better. 2nd Sunday has always enjoyed the contributions of local and regional musicians, mostly just talented folks jammin’ on the street. Let’s do that again.
Buskers welcome at 2nd Sunday on King Street!

Because 2nd Sunday is such a popular event among locals and regionals, it’s become important to business development on the peninsula. We are complying with every city, county and state guideline, including frequent review by the mayors office and special events committee. We will encourage vaccinations, masks, and social distancing according to CDC recommendations.

2nd Sunday on King Street Returning September 12
CHARLESTON, SC (June 14, 2021) --- 2nd Sunday on King Street will return to its every-month schedule beginning Sunday, September 12th after an 18-month hiatus due to Covid-19 protocols, announced Susan Lucas, President of the Charleston Peninsula Preservation Trust (CPPT), the non-profit that manages and produces the event.
“We’re very excited to re-start 2nd Sunday,” said Lucas. “It’s been sorely missed by the downtown retail and dining establishments and the thousands of local and regional visitors who come to stroll, shop, dine and enjoy Charleston’s “Main Street” on a vehicle-free, pedestrian-only afternoon.”
2nd Sunday on King Street began in October 2010 and this fall will celebrate its 11th anniversary closing King Street from Calhoun to Queen Streets to all vehicular traffic from noon to 5 p.m. Typical attendance ranges from 12 to 18 thousand visitors per 2nd Sunday.
“It’s the most popular and most regularly attended event on the peninsula,” said Karl Krull, Vice-President and Director of Operations for CPPT. “More than 1.5 million guests have patronized 2nd Sunday since its inception. We can’t wait to get it rolling again.”

Relaunching a great event
Remember 2nd Sunday? It’s coming back! Starting September 12, 2021 and returning on the second Sunday of every month, we’ll close King Street from Queen to Calhoun, announce wonderful events all over the peninsula, and invite everybody to join us. Just like every month the 10 years before the pandemic, people will walk King Street, pop in to their favorite restaurant for breakfast, brunch or dinner, shop for up an item or two and go home remembering why we’re all here. Musicians will play, painters will paint, locals especially will walk the street with a smile.

Happy Quarantine Valentine Blues
Why do Valentine images have to be lipstick red, when blue is so much more calming? Covid quarantine has changed my preferences; how about you?

Making Whimsy for Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital with Tate Nation and Marius Valdes
This painting (above) was commissioned by the new MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital in downtown Charleston. “Quite an honor for me,” Nation said. “At 48 X 36 it’s a bit larger than most of my paintings. Its new home will be in the lobby of a floor whose theme is ‘Cruising in the Lowcountry.’ It’s my hope that it’ll provide many smiles and much joy to the hospital’s young patients and their families and friends!”
Good news! There's a puzzle coming featuring this print. We’re anticipating November arrival and a quick sell out of the first printing. Even more good news: at check out, the very first box asks you where you heard about these great posts. Enter the word GIFT and you'll get a free gift from Tate along with your appraisal order.
And on the Shawn Jenkins 7th floor you’ll see the work of Marius Valdes, who we discovered on Jack’s Cosmic Dogs Merch, and now has so many fun colorful products in his Zoo Valdes Society6 store and ValdesArt on Etsy. Valdes, a University of South Carolina studio art professor in the College of Arts and Sciences, has been making affordable, family friendly, and award-winning artwork since 2001.
