2nd Sunday on King Street

For fans of Charleston culture

King Street shops, restaurants and galleries from Queen Street to Calhoun may apply for a permit to use the space in front of their establishment. As a brick and mortar store, restaurant or gallery on King Street, you can benefit the most from this much loved monthly enterprise. Discounted permits give you access to the street to display merchandise, welcome guests or hold that space wide open for unobstructed storefront visibility. Yes, you have first right of refusal for the street permit in front of your location. You’ll also enhance your marketing with 2nd Sunday’s powerful social and email positioning. Call Karl Krull at (864) 915-3186 or email karl.krull@charlestonppt.org.

Other peninsula shops, restaurants, artisans, makers and galleries may also apply for space on the street. Call or email Karl.

2nd Sunday Sponsors get lots of attention in the partnership. If your business doesn’t have a brick and mortar location or isn’t based on the peninsula, you can still partner with 2nd Sunday via sponsorships. To inquire about sponsor opportunities, call Karl Krull at (864) 915-3186 or email karl.krull@charlestonppt.org

2nd Sunday on King Street is a monthly event for the public to enjoy shopping, dining and other services on a pedestrian-only afternoon. From noon to 5:00 PM on the second Sunday of each month King Street is vehicle-free from Queen Street to Calhoun. The event promotes King Street and Charleston Peninsula commerce and hospitality; all businesses are encouraged to participate by being open all day and inviting their customers.

Emails, press releases and social media promote the event throughout the region. Parking vouchers are available for download on the 2nd Sunday website, www.shop2ndsunday.com

Participant Guidelines:

Retail merchants on the closed portion of King Street may request a permit to display their own merchandise on the street in front of their shops, parallel to the curb and 6’ out, beginning at 12:00 PM. Sidewalks may not be occupied. Permitted space is for the applicant only and cannot be sublet, shared or assigned.

  • Restaurants on the closed portion of King Street may request a permit and space assignment to serve food in the street in front of their establishment beginning at noon. Restaurants may serve adult beverages to seated dining patrons outdoors if they have an existing Sunday license and are in the business of serving meals prepared on the premises. Table settings may not be more than one row deep or more than 6’ from the curb. Cooking must be done inside unless specifically allowed by permit. Umbrellas may be utilized by the restaurant if adequately secured; tents are permitted if weighted to protect from wind.

  • If alcohol is served to seated dining patrons, the area must be separated by stanchions, with signage at entry/exit points containing the verbiage “no alcohol beyond this point”.

• Food carts or other licensed food businesses may request a permit and space assignment to operate on the street within 6’ of the curb. Request must include copies of their City of Charleston Business License, Revenue Collections Division Hospitality Tax compliance, SC Retail Sales Tax License, and SC Dept. of Health and Environmental certification. For each cooking location the City requires a K Type Fire Extinguisher.

• Musicians may request a permit and space assignment to play un-amplified music on the sidewalks.

• Participants are responsible for their own security and cleanup.

  • There will be no vendors, outside businesses, nonprofit or political organizations, tents, street displays, signage, amplified sound, activities or stages except those specifically permitted by the 2nd Sunday Committee.

  • Vendors must occupy assigned spaces. If assigned spaces are not available for any reason, call Karl or Mark for immediate reassignment.

• Distribution of brochures or other printed materials, surveying and soliciting are not permitted except for sponsors and vendors within their space.

• No animals are permitted on the street except for leashed companion or service dogs that passively tolerate the presence of other dogs, children and crowds. Dogs may not be left unattended and owners are responsible for immediate cleanup of waste.

• At least 13’ must be kept clear in the center of the street for emergency vehicles. Corners and loading zones may not be occupied. Fire hydrants may not be blocked.

• Parking meters will be bagged before 4:00 PM on Saturday with signage concerning the Sunday noon deadline for removal of all cars.

Food Truck Guidelines

11:30-12:00 pm detach trailer and park your vehicle if applicable. Optimal arrival time is 11:45-12:00. Please stay until street reopens at 5:00 pm.

If power is required, “quiet” generators only. Or, electricity is available at top of lamp posts; bring your ladder.

Bring settees, benches, and tables if you like. Remember we need to keep 13’ wide in the middle of the street for emergency vehicles.

Where to park: food truck area is at 177 to 162 King St and south toward Queen Street. You can block the driveways each side of the white non-retail building but not the Library Society driveway next door.
